Classification Standard

NATURE OF WORK

A Launderer tends various machines and performs a variety of routine manual laundry tasks in a State institution laundry.

Launderer positions are located in several agencies with the greatest number in the Offices of Mental Health and Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

A Launderer performs a variety of routine and repetitive laundry tasks such as loading, unloading, checking, sorting and marking of wearing apparel and flatwork, and operating such laundry equipment as flatwork ironers, extractors and tumblers. Incumbents work under the direct supervision of a higher level laundry position, usually a Senior Launderer.

Positions of Senior Launderer supervise and work with laundry employees and/or wards of the State in an institution laundry. Incumbents operate automatic laundry equipment requiring skill and knowledge of laundry practices and methods, and supervise a staff of laundry employees by providing instruction and assistance as required, and by periodically checking quality and quantity of work produced.
