These entry-level positions lead to Salary Grade 20 positions, starting salary $49,992, after one year of successful State service and possession of a Fundamentals in Engineering Certification.
NO APPLICATION PROCESSING FEE REQUIRED
Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or WestchesterCounties will receive an additional $1,302 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or PutnamCounties will receive an additional $651 annual mid-Hudson adjustment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: On or before the date of filing your application, you must have:
Either 1: a bachelor's or higher-level degree in environmental engineering, environmental engineering technology, civil engineering, civil engineering technology, chemical engineering, geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, or sanitary engineering;
Or 2: a bachelor's or higher-level degree in engineering supplemented by or including a minimum of one course in FOUR of the following categories totaling at least 12 semester credit hours: water and wastewater engineering, stream and estuarine analysis, limnology, solid waste engineering, groundwater and wastewater hydrology, industrial waste treatment, physical chemical waste treatment, hazardous waste management, environmental lab, environmental engineering design, air pollution control, groundwater hydrology, hydraulic engineering, or water supply engineering; AND a minimum of one course in TWO of the following categories totaling at least 6 semester credit hours: organic chemistry, soil mechanics, geology, environmental impact analysis, environmental law, radiological engineering, safety in engineering practice, public health/sanitation, toxicology, environmental planning and land use, or fluid mechanics. If you qualify under this option, you must submit your transcript for evaluation with your application.
Important: If you are within six months of receiving an acceptable degree, your application can be approved. If your application is approved pending receipt of an acceptable degree, and your name is placed on the eligible list, and you are offered employment, you must submit proof of graduation to the appointing authority before reporting to work.
NOTES:
THE POSITIONS: Environmental Engineering positions exist in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation at various locations throughout the state. A limited number of Junior Engineer positions concerned with Sanitary Engineering exist in the New York State Department of Health.
DUTIES: As an Environmental Engineer, you would perform engineering work within such program areas as: waste water treatment; water resources management and pollution control; air pollution control; pollution prevention; environmental remediation of containments; solid waste management; hazardous substances regulation; hazardous waste management; emergency response; spill prevention; bulk storage; or building and recreational facility maintenance, design, and construction.
As a Junior Engineer – Sanitary Engineering, you would work in one or more of the following program areas: evaluating drinking water pilot treatment plants, watershed protection programs, and individual sewage disposal systems; inspecting water treatment facilities; reviewing water supply engineering plans and specifications and swimming pool plans; investigating water quality; and assessing hazardous waste exposure.
SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: There will be no written test. If you meet the Minimum Qualifications your education and experience will be evaluated against the general background/critical activities of the position. It is essential that you describe your education and experience as completely as possible on the NYS-APP Open Competitive Examination Application form. Ambiguity, vagueness or omissions will not be decided in your favor. Do NOT send resumes. If you need more space, attach additional 8½" x 11” sheets, following the same format used on the application form. Additional unsolicited information will not be accepted after the last day for filing.
Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime veterans’ and Civil Service Law Section85-a credits to your final passing score.
Selective Certification of Eligible List: Successful candidates will be grouped according to the specialization of the engineering degree or coursework.
Environmental/Sanitary: environmental engineering, environmental engineering technology, geological engineering, geotechnical engineering, or sanitary engineering; Chemical: chemical engineering; Civil: civil engineering, civil engineering technology.
Certification of selective list will be determined by the position to be filled.
