Appointees in the New York City area (Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond [Staten Island], Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester Counties) will receive an additional $1,200 annual location pay differential/downstate adjustment.

THE POSITION: The majority of these positions are located in the Department of Health and in the facilities run by the Office of Mental Health and the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

As a Medical Technologist 1, you would perform the more specialized and complex chemical, physical and microscopic procedures and tests on specimens of blood, sputum, urine, spinal fluids and tissues. These tests and procedures include but are not limited to radio-immunoassays, blood smears, amino acid analyses, blood typing, enzyme assays, electrophoresis, complement assays and coagulation studies. Under supervision, you may carry out developmental studies and research in production of standard reagents and methodologies. You may develop new laboratory techniques, implement new or modified procedures and prepare statistical reports.

You may supervise technical and non technical employees and train personnel in technical procedures. You may check completed work for accuracy and for conformance to standards, correcting and retraining where necessary; prepare work schedules; inform personnel of rules, regulations and other communications; and evaluate employee performance. You may maintain the quality control program and you may perform maintenance and minor repair of equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: On or before the date of filing your application, you must meet one of the following requirements:

I.
bachelor's degree in medical technology;

or II.

a minimum of 90 semester hours or equivalent in an accredited college or university AND the successful completion of a course of training of at least 12 months in a school of medical technology approved by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association;
or III.
bachelor's degree in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences AND one year of training and/or experience in medical technology;
or IV.
any combination of academic study and training and/or experience outlined in Section 58 of Title 10 of the New York State Public Health Law.

NOTE:

  1. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside the United State and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service.This information is also available here.You must pay the required evaluation fee.
  2. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.
  3. Appointees to positions having overall laboratory supervisory duties must meet the qualifications of Section 58 of the New York State Public Health Law.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: If you meet the "Minimum Qualifications" stated above, your education and experience will be evaluated, against the general background of the position, and a rating assigned by Subject Matter Experts at the facility to which you apply. Your final score will be based on the evaluation of your education and experience.

Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime veterans credits or Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your passing score.

Mail your completed application and supplement to the Personnel Office(s) of the facilities where you are interested in working (see listing below). If your name is placed on the eligible list at one facility, you may request that facility to transfer your score to other facilities.

It is essential that you include all pertinent details in your application. Vagueness and omission will not be resolved in your favor and additional information will NOT be accepted after your application has been filed. Do not send a resume. If you need more space, attach 8 1/2" x 11" sheets following the same format as the supplement.

CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT/ELIGIBLE LISTS: Candidates who meet the qualifications and pass this examination will have their names placed on the eligible list in the order of final scores, regardless of the date on which they filed or took the test. Generally, the names of qualified candidates will remain on the eligible list for two years. Appeal of ratings will not be allowed as the opportunity for retest exists. The Department of Civil Service reserves the right to terminate this special recruitment program.
